Vikings QB J.J. McCarthy is earning a reputation during 2025 — and it’s not something he wants to be known for.

The 2025 season cannot end soon enough for the Minnesota Vikings, as quarterback J.J. McCarthy has been ruled out with a right hand injury.

The play came on a second down right before the half, when head coach Kevin O’Connell designed a tunnel screen to wide receiver Justin Jefferson, and the New York Giants had it covered. Edge rusher Brian Burns strip-sacked McCarthy, and safety Tyler Nubin returned the fumble for a touchdown.

J.J. McCarthy’s hand injury is a sign of a bigger issue

The Vikings ruled McCarthy out within 15 minutes of the injury occurring, and they hadn’t taken the field yet in the second half. When a player is ruled out that quickly, it’s usually due to a concussion or a different kind of severe injury.

When McCarthy suffered a concussion a few weeks ago against the Green Bay Packers, I wrote about the biggest issue for McCarthy: his durability.

It’s a little odd that McCarthy, who was very healthy in college at Michigan, is incredibly injured in the NFL. Some of that is just bad luck, but McCarthy isn’t putting himself in good situations either. His high ankle sprain and getting into concussion protocol were arguably both caused because he wasn’t protecting himself.

That becomes a major problem for the Vikings. If you can’t play on Sundays, how much value are you bringing to the organization? It also brings into question the quote from O’Connell talking about how organizations fail young quarterbacks.

It’s a problem for McCarthy that he can’t stay healthy, and even more of an issue that it comes after a healthy college football career. We couldn’t have predicted this to happen, but it does raise a major question: Can you trust McCarthy going into 2026? He’s earning the label of being injury-prone, and that’s not somewhere you want to be.

That’s the conundrum the Vikings will have to face, and it’s a brutal one for the franchise’s first-ever top-10 selection at quarterback.
