The Minnesota Vikings already had a difficult decision on their hands with J.J. McCarthy struggling massively against the Green Bay Packers. Things got worse coming out of the game, as head coach Kevin O’Connell announced that McCarthy has entered the concussion protocol after reporting symptoms after Sunday’s game.

With that in mind, it means that undrafted UDFA rookie Max Brosmer will take all of the first-team reps and would be in line to get the start on Sunday against the Seattle Seahawks.

Max Brosmer to get first-team reps with J.J. McCarthy in concussion protocol

It’s a fascinating one for the Vikings. Yes, McCarthy’s struggles have sparked difficult conversations about what to do at quarterback for the rest of the season. It’s gotten to a point where many have asked to see Brosmer get a chance, because, in theory, it can’t get any worse than a -0.67 EPA/play. As Vikings fans know, it can always get worse, and making that move could send a dangerous message about McCarthy’s future.

With him in concussion protocol, the Vikings can operate in a different capacity. They can focus on McCarthy’s health rather than just the on-field product. It is also a perfect excuse to give Brosmer a chance at quarterback without benching McCarthy. Will he be good enough to lead the offense to sustaining drives? Based on what we saw in the preseason, there’s a real chance he does.

O’Connell has maximized every quarterback he’s had to start other than McCarthy in his tenure with the Vikings. Will Brosmer be added to the list? Sunday could be the start of the next Brock Purdy situation. However, McCarthy hasn’t been ruled out yet, and we won’t know until later in the week.
