The Minnesota Vikings finally have their answer on safety Harrison Smith. The veteran safety is returning to Minnesota on a one-year deal worth $8 million that could reach up to $16 million with incentives, according to The Ringer’s Tom Pelissero.
The deal brings back one of the best communicators on the team and a player who can run defensive coordinator Ryan Flores’ scheme. Smith’s return adds a familiar presence to the back end of the Vikings’ defense heading into the 2026 season.

What makes this signing fascinating is the timing. Smith has always been a little unique in how he handles his offseason decisions. He waited until free agency last year to make a decision, and this year he waited until eight days before the beginning of the regular season to come back.
Smith’s return could be tied to the Aaron Donald situation in Los Angeles. The Rams were given a two-week roster exemption for Donald while he gets into football shape, and that precedent matters. The Vikings could keep their roster intact while getting Smith 100% ready to return. It’s a smart way to handle the logistics of bringing back a veteran this late in the process without disrupting what they’ve already built.

The move makes a lot of sense from multiple angles, but there are legitimate questions worth asking. Is Smith still going to be an impactful player outside of being that great communicator on the back end? He did show signs of regression last year, and that could be a big factor in this defense.
Along with that, what does this move signal about the Vikings’ confidence in Jay Ward? Minnesota’s been invested in Ward’s development, and bringing Smith back raises the question of whether they have enough confidence in him to be a full-time starter. It also could be a moot point, as they would welcome Smith back with open arms regardless.
No matter how you spin it, the Vikings got one of their franchise cornerstones back for one more year. From a PR standpoint, it’s a great move. Will it end up working on the football field? Only time will give us that answer. But for right now, Smith is back, and that’s pretty cool.
