Kevin O'Connell was asked about the running back competition ahead of Monday Night Football.
Only the Las Vegas Raiders and Cincinnati Bengals have had less effective running games than the Vikings. The Vikes are averaging just 75 yards per game on the ground. It appeared the team found a spark plug with Cam Akers, however any positive momentum was squashed last weekend.
Now, O'Connell is open to all possibilities.
O'Connell was asked if Kene Nwangwu will strictly be used on special teams, or if he has a role on the offense as well.
"Kene looks outstanding. To get that kind of an explosive athleticism back anywhere on your field, whether it is in the kicking game, the return game, gunner, whatever it is and then infusing him back into your offense, as well, is a real positive," explained the coach.
The Vikings added Nwangwu to the active roster this week after placed Marcus Davenport on IR. The back has seen most of his action on special teams over the years.
The coach was also asked if Akers will get more involved after receiving just one carry a week ago.
"Yeah, the potential for it is absolutely there. We’ll look at it from the standpoint of making sure we give all those guys a chance to get in the rhythm of the game. I’ve really liked what Cam has done since he got here," O'Connell explained.
The Vikings will need all the offensive help they can get against a tough Niners team on MNF.
