Minnesota Vikings quest to improve their salary cap situation has an unexpected consequence
T.J. Hockenson gets something unique in return for accepting a pay cut.
The Minnesota Vikings have been working to get under the salary cap. The latest move was tight end T.J. Hockenson agreeing to take a pay cut. He was due a base salary of $15.4 million and a total of $16 million in cash with a salary cap hit of $21.2 million.
It was a huge win for the Vikings to help them get under the salary cap and be active in free agency. They will be saving $5 million with the pay cut, but they had to give Hockenson something in return.
Minnesota Vikings void T.J. Hockenson’s final year of contract
In order to facilitate a pay cut, the Vikings had to give Hockenson his freedom. They voided the final year of his contract, which will make him a free agent after the season.
That’s quite the large concession for the Vikings. They signed Hockenson to a four-year, $66 million contract extension ahead of the 2023 season after trading second and third-round picks for him and two fourth-round picks.
in all totality, Hockenson hasn’t been the player they wanted him to be after the torn ACL he suffered on Christmas Eve of the 2023 season. The last two seasons, Hockenson has failed to get over 500 yards in each of the last two seasons, which has been an issue for the fanbase.
With the Vikings voiding the final year of his contract, it means a couple of things. He won’t be eligible for the compensatory pick formula next year. That could be a factor into the Vikings’ free agency process in 2027.
The other major element is the future at tight end. The position all of the sudden becomes a bigger need than it was even a few hours ago. A player in the first three rounds is certainly on the table, as it’s a hard position to both find and develop.
If this is how things are going to go the few days before free agency begins, the Vikings are certainly going to have way more for us when it does.
