Running back is a very deep position in the NFL Draft this year and the Minnesota Vikings could very well find someone in this class to make an impact this season.
General manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah has selected two running backs in his three NFL Drafts: Ty Chandler (5th round, 2022) and DeWayne McBride (7th round, 2023). Taking one in this loaded class would be a smart move both short and long term.
The latest installment of our SKOL Search series focuses on a very popular name in NFL Mock Drafts after a dominant College Football Playoff performance in Arizona State RB Cam Skattebo.
Cam Skattebo
- Arizona State
- Transfer from Sacramento State
- Height: 5090
- Weight: 215
- Class: Third-year Junior
- 2024 Heisman Trophy Runner Up
- Recruiting info: 4-star recruit in 2022 class per 247 Sports
- Stats: 750 carries, 4,769 yards, 6.4 YPC, 50 touchdowns, 80 receptions, 862 yards, 6 touchdowns
- Games watched: Oregon State 2024, Washington State 2024, Oregon 2024
Strengths
- Contact balance: Skattebo is built like a Mack truck and is not someone who goes down easily. He forced 103 missed tackles this past season and 262 across 711 carries. Skattebo will run through you, over you, and can put a juke or spin move.
- Quickness: Skattebo doesn't look like he's quick, but the feet certainly are. He maneuvers through the hole with nimble feet, able to make sudden cuts when necessary. Skattebo also bursts well for a player his size, threatening second level defenders quicker than expected.
- Versatility: Despite being a bigger back who is akin to a Mike Allstott of yesteryear, Skattebo does a little bit of everything. He's a true three-down back with 111 career receptions and is a monster as a blocker in the passing game picking up blitzers.
Weaknesses
- Physicality/Durability: Skattebo has taken a lot of punishment over his career due to his physical running style. It's a big part of his game and that can prevent him from a long career, along with being more apt to suffering injuries.
- Top speed: It's definitely not his game, but Skattebo isn't a burner. He will burst through the hole, but will only be a doubles hitter at the next level.
- Ball Security: Skattebo's physical style can cause some fumbles because he will not go down without a fight. He fumbled the ball 10 times in his career on 822 touches, a number that is certainly too high on a long-term basis.

Skattebo is a modern-day version of a throwback power runner. He is similar to a player Vikings fans know all too well in Leroy Hoard. He's got more to him than just being a power back, but that's his bread and butter.
The Vikings haven't had a real power back for a while and could certainly use him in that realm. Plus, he's a good receiver and pass blocker, giving the Vikings everything they need in a third-down running back.
