The offseason for the Minnesota Vikings has begun after the 27-9 loss to the Los Angeles Rams and it's not a great feeling.

They got destroyed by the Rams in brutal fashion for the entire nation to see and they took a step backward, despite winning 14 games. Quarterback Sam Darnold couldn't take the necessary step forward that the Vikings needed to win their first playoff game since 2019 and the first under head coach Kevin O'Connell.

Now that the offseason is underway, it's time to take a look at what the Vikings have in store for them. The NFL Draft is in April, but they need to figure out the elements of free agency first.

Minnesota Vikings have high profile free agents

Free agency has been huge for the Vikings in rebuilding the roster. General manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah has done a great job in figuring out how to maneuver through the competitive rebuild that they started when he arrived in January of 2022.

This past offseason saw the Vikings dominate in free agency. They got multiple Pro Bowl players in Darnold, edge rusher Jonathan Greenard, and edge rusher Andrew Van Ginkel. That doesn't include Pro Bowl snub inside linebacker Blake Cashman and cornerbacks Stephon Gilmore and Shaquill Griffin. They played a ton of snaps for the Vikings this year and made a huge impact.

In the midst of this competitive rebuild, they are also set to lose the most snaps played this year via free agency.

This number is somewhat inflated due to injuries suffered by left tackle Christian Darrisaw, quarterback J.J. McCarthy, and cornerback Mekhi Blackmon. They would have likely played nearly 2,000 snaps that weren't recorded this year. However, they are still in a position to lose multiple free agents. The list is as follows:

  • QB Sam Darnold
  • QB Nick Mullens
  • QB Brett Rypien
  • QB Daniel Jones
  • RB Aaron Jones
  • WR Trent Sherfield
  • WR Brandon Powell
  • TE Johnny Mundt
  • OT Cam Robinson
  • OT David Quessenberry
  • OG Dalton Risner
  • OG Dan Feeney
  • OG Henry Byrd
  • CB Byron Murphy Jr.
  • CB Stephon Gilmore
  • CB Shaquill Griffin
  • DE Jerry Tillery
  • DE Jonathan Bullard
  • DE Jalen Redmond (Exclusive Rights)
  • EDGE Jihad Ward
  • EDGE Pat Jones II
  • ILB Kamu Grugier-Hill
  • CB Byron Murphy Jr.
  • CB Stephon Gilmore
  • CB Shaquill Griffin
  • CB Fabian Moreau
  • S Harrison Smith
  • S Camryn Bynum
  • S Theo Jackson (Restricted)
  • P Ryan Wright (Restricted)

There are some very important players in this group, especially in the secondary with five of their six "starters" being free agents. The Vikings will have around $70 million in salary cap space to bring those players back and make the team in 2025 even better.

There is going to be time to discuss these things with the players, as free agency won't open for just under two months.
