Vikings fortify roster ahead of Sunday’s game vs. Falcons with fan favorite and much-needed depth
The Vikings make necessary moves ahead of Sunday’s game
The Minnesota Vikings got some tough news on Friday afternoon with edge rusher Andrew Van Ginkel and cornerback Jeff Okudah. However, that was expected, and the Vikings had a plan to try and mitigate their losses.
Ahead of their Week 2 matchup against the Atlanta Falcons, the Vikings elevated edge rusher Gabe Murphy and cornerback Fabian Moreau to the active roster from the practice squad.
Vikings elevate Gabe Murphy and Fabian Moreau from practice squad
These elevations make all the sense in the world. Murphy had a tremendous preseason with multiple sacks and thrived in every situation he was put in. It was rather shocking that the Vikings cut him because of that preseason, with many believing he would be claimed off waivers. That didn’t happen, as the Vikings got him back onto the practice squad.
Bringing in Murphy is huge for the Vikings since they will have one more player to bring into the rotation. The likely reason why Bo Richter and Chaz Chambliss were kept over Murphy was due to their immense special teams acumen. Murphy probably slides into the third edge rusher role after Dallas Turner, who is primed to break out this season.
Moreau was on the Vikings’ roster and practice squad last season and played in multiple games. He rejoined the Vikings’ practice squad after final cuts and will give the Vikings one more player on the outside. He could end up playing over Dwight McGlothern due to his experience in the NFL.
The visiting Falcons also elevated a player from the practice squad in kicker Parker Romo, who was with the Vikings last season, hitting 11-of-12 field goals and was perfect on extra points. It’s great to see Romo getting a chance, but the revenge game factor will resonate in the minds of Vikings fans.
