The Minnesota Vikings were interested in bringing in wide receiver Cooper Kupp after the Los Angeles Rams released him at the beginning of the league year on Wednesday. However, that didn't end up working out they way they had wanted.

On Friday afternoon, Kupp agreed to a three-year contract with the Seattle Seahawks in free agency, giving new quarterback Sam Darnold another weapon on the outside.

Vikings miss out on Cooper Kupp

It mad a lot of sense for the Vikings to land Kupp in free agency. They could use an upgrade at third wide receiver with Jalen Nailor both entering the final year of his contract while also being inconsistent when he's on the field.

Kupp also made a ton of sense due to his past with the Rams. Vikings head coach Kevin O'Connell spent two seasons with Kupp, including helping him earn the wide receiver triple crown in the Super Bowl season of 2021.

This is what The Athletic's Dianna Russini said about Kupp potentially going to the Vikings Thursday night on her podcast Scoop City.

"Minnesota Vikings (are) poking around on it. Kevin O'Connell is familiar with Cooper Kupp because they were together when he was with the LA Rams. So this familiarity, which you know we talked about this last time, about the familiarity either working for you or working against you, right? Because the team that knows you, that you've been with, knows the good and the bad, right? And sometimes the bad is what probably does get you signed, if there's coaches from that for that organization on another team, no doubt, I've seen that happen, so we'll see how this shakes out."

Missing out on Kupp is a frustrating one for the Vikings, as he would have made a huge impact at the third wide receiver spot. It especially hurts because of the familiarity Kupp has in the offense and his insane blocking ability.

Where do the Vikings go from here? They still need to add 1-3 wide receivers regardless, as they need depth at the position. Rondale Moore is visiting the Vikings on Friday and his punt return ability is something the Vikings are looking to prioritize, as Brandon Powell struggled doing so last year.

There aren't a ton of options out there if the Vikings want to truly upgrade the position, but there are some intriguing names.

  • Stefon Diggs
  • Keenan Allen
  • Amari Cooper
  • Diontae Johnson
  • Tyler Lockett
  • Brandin Cooks
  • Elijah Moore

Plus, there is the possibility of the Vikings taking one in the NFL Draft come April. It's especially more likely due to how the Vikings have fortified many of their major needs during free agency.
