Minnesota Vikings have a healthy salary cap situation, still have room for more extensions

The salary cap has been a major factor over the last few years for the Minnesota Vikings. The 2024 season has an astounding amount of dead money at $65,451,865 as they are still dealing with quarterback Kirk Cousins' money. It is the last season they will be dealing with a lot of dead money and things look much healthier moving forward.
Minnesota Vikings salary cap is healthy
After the Vikings extended defensive tackle Harrison Phillips, the salary cap saw a shift. This season, the Vikings have $11,209,513 in remaining salary cap space which they will likely roll over a decent portion of that. Here is how things break down for the salary cap.
- 2024 salary cap space: $11,209,513
- Dead money: $65,451,865
- Practice squad: $4,455,244
- Injured reserve: $9,554,071
- Physically unable to perform list: $7,021,176
The Vikings don't just have a healthy salary cap situation this season in terms of current space, they are also set up for the future. The 2025 season is currently projected to have $76,007,788 in salary cap space. Over The Cap has updated their projections with $272,500,000 in projected space for the 2025 season. The Vikings' space will also include whatever money they roll over, which will likely be in the neighborhood of $7-8 million depending on a number of factors.
Vikings have room for extensions
The Vikings giving Phillips an extension after week one was interesting, especially since they haven't really done anything in-season in the Kwesi Adofo-Mensah era in terms of a contract extension.
The cap space the Vikings have could bring multiple extensions back to the table. There has been a lot of talk that Camryn Bynum has been in discussions with the team on an extension and getting him done would certainly be a smart idea.
These were my predictions on potential extensions when I wrote about it before week one.
- CB Byron Murphy Jr.: 3 years, $30 million, $16.5 million guaranteed
- S Josh Metellus: 3 years, $25 million, $14.5 million guaranteed
- S Camryn Bynum: 3 years, $36 million, $20.5 million guaranteed
There is certainly room for the Vikings to make something work if they wanted to. The question remains if both sides would want to during the season.
2 surprises appear on Minnesota Vikings injury report, could be huge losses in Week 2 vs. 49ers
Some major question marks for both teams
