Despite the Minnesota Vikings not being able to get anything done on offense, it was head coach Kevin O’Connell’s unit that came up big to seal a 23-10 win over the Detroit Lions on Christmas Day. It wasn’t just a win; the Vikings eliminated the Lions from the playoffs.

The big story coming out of the game will be about Brian Flores’ defense, as they forced six turnovers on Thursday afternoon. Jared Goff had one of his worst games as a professional in committing five of those, and Harrison Smith had a big game in likely the second-to-last home game of his career.

Thursday’s game was all about the defense, as the offense couldn’t do much of anything. They had three net passing yards on the day, and Max Brosmer struggled mightily throughout the day. Some of that was due to the defense, while the offensive line had three backups, making things harder in the pocket.

With the Vikings up just 13-10 late in the fourth quarter, they needed to find a way to score some points. The Lions had just come within three points after kicking a field goal, and a three-point lead may not be good enough. One thing that kept up over the course of the game was the Lions’ aggressiveness on defense. Edge rusher Aidan Hutchinson is one of the more aggressive players in the NFL, and the Vikings have found a way to take advantage of it consistently.

In their first matchup back in November, head coach Kevin O’Connell found a way to attack Hutchinson, doing so to go back up two scores and seal a victory at Ford Field.

You can see Hutchinson take two strong steps forward toward the quarterback, and the jet sweep was the perfect counterpunch. You have to be careful to not call it too often, otherwise it will keep Hutchinson from being too aggressive. It’s also why this call worked so well.

Hutchinson isn’t the only one who goes aggressive to the inside. Jalen Nailor, appearing to run a quick slant, helps get the cornerback to crash inside, and Addison gets the edge for a touchdown. Calling it at the right time to capitalize on the over pursuit is key to finding success as a play caller, and O’Connell has done that well this year.

The Vikings are currently 0.500 because of the details and hard work of the players, and it’s a good sign moving forward.
