Right now, the focus for the Minnesota Vikings is on the immediate future of their 14-2 record going into Ford Field to take on the Detroit Lions. The game is the first-ever to be a winner-take-all for both a division title and the number one overall seed.

However, a significant portion of the discussion surrounding the team is focused on the future isn't on the huge game against the Lions. All most people can talk about is the future of the quarterback position.

Sam Darnold has been a renaissance for the Vikings this year throwing for a career-high 36 touchdowns and putting himself in the Most Valuable Player discussion. Would the Vikings end up keeping Darnold when they just selected J.J. McCarthy at 10th overall?

Adam Schefter talks future of Sam Darnold and J.J. McCarthy

What the Vikings will do is going to be fascinating for many reasons, especially when you consider the ripple effect it will have across the league. During an appearance on ESPN Radio, NFL insider Adam Schefter opined about the Vikings potentially trading McCarthy, stating that teams will call.

"In a limited quarterback draft class, where there are far more teams that need quarterbacks than quarterbacks who actually can step in right away, I definitely think teams will be checking in with the Vikings to see if they have any interest in trading J.J. McCarthy.

"If the Vikings decided that they wanted to trade him, which I don't know that they will, I believe they will get back everything they put into him and then some. It will be a [first-round pick] and then some."

This is where things get really interesting. The Vikings used the 10th overall pick on McCarthy and traded fourth and sixth-round picks to move up one spot. Theoretically, that would mean the Vikings would get back at least that much.

It's a tough decision alone to pick between the two players, but a hefty return for McCarthy could be a huge asset for the Vikings if they did end up selecting Darnold over him.

If the trade market would really be that flush for McCarthy, it would make things that much easier to go with Darnold, even with the large contract he would command.

What will the Vikings end up doing? We have about 70 days to figure that out.
