Could the New England Patriots trade for a top receiver?

ESPN's Jeremy Fowler reports that the Los Angeles Rams are looking into trading wide receiver Van Jefferson.

Despite being a key part in the Rams 2021 Super Bowl victory, Jefferson has not been a top target this season. Yet, while he isn't being featured in Los Angeles, he has the possibility to be highlighted elsewhere.

And Jefferson has to be at least a little familiar with the Patriots organization, with his father being former Patriots receiver Shawn Jefferson. He played with the New England from 1996–1999.

New England is in desperate need of a top receiver this season, with no one truly standing out. And injuries have also not been kind to the receiving core.

So why not take advantage of a top target potentially being available.

Jefferson was drafted by the Rams in the second round of the 2020 NFL Draft. His best season was in 2021, having 50 receptions for 802 yards and six touchdowns.

Throughout his entire four years in the league, Jefferson has appeared in 49 games, recording 101 receptions for 1,499 yards and 10 touchdowns.

And he has another positive that the Patriots are surely going to like. Jefferson has only one fumble during those four years, which is good for a team that preaches ball security despite their challenges with it so far.

Both JuJu Smith-Schuster and Demario Douglas did not practice on Tuesday after leaving Sunday's game early due to head injuries. It appears they both sustained concussions. However, Tyquan Thornton did make his long awaited return, providing Mac Jones with one of his top (and speedy) targets.

Let's see if the Patriots make a move for Jefferson in the coming days.
