The NFL offseason is a constant whirlwind. The latest move by the New Orleans Saints is a notable addition for their defensive coaching staff under new defensive coordinator Brandon Staley.

Staley was hired late last week as Kellen Moore's DC for New Orleans.

Saints hire new defensive assistant

According to reports, the Saints are hiring Texas Longhorns secondary coach Terry Joseph as their defensive pass game coordinator. Joseph is a New Orleans native.

Joseph has some interesting ties within his family when it comes to coaching, too. His cousins, Vance and Mickey Joseph, are well-respected coaches. Vance has been a defensive coordinator in the NFL for quite some time and currently coaches Sean Payton's defense with the Denver Broncos.

Joseph has played a part in developing some premier defensive backs. Texas corner Jahdae Barron won the Jim Thorpe Award — given annually to the nation's top defensive back — last year while playing under Joseph. — Luke Johnson

Joseph will step into a situation in New Orleans with plenty of questions in the secondary.

Tyrann Mathieu seems like he's returning next season, but he continues to age. Alontae Taylor could play inside or outside CB in 2025, yet to be determined. Kool-Aid McKinstry projects as a starter in his second pro season next year.

Paulson Adebo is currently an impending free agent, who will get plenty of interest around the NFL.

Paulson Adebo has been one of the most unique players at his position in recent years. At his peak, he's played at a Pro Bowl level. At other times, he's been a liability due to penalties. There seemed to be very little in between for the cornerback. A great characteristic is that he had a knack for somehow coming up with an interception in clutch moments.

The cornerback played only seven games in 2024, but that's a freaky injury, more than a lingering issue, and the contract projection makes him an intriguing option.

Joseph will have his work cut out for him, alongside Staley, with the Saints. We will see if his impressive work in the college ranks over the past few seasons pays off on Kellen Moore's staff in New Orleans.
