The New York Giants’ seismic move to hire John Harbaugh has sent shockwaves across the New York media market.
Fans are rejoicing as the Giants are expected to land the best coach on the market this cycle. This hire signifies that the franchise is taking the process of building a winner more seriously. It should also excite the entire Giants roster and front office. There are three players in particular who should be the most excited.
Jaxon Dart primed for success
There is no bigger winner in this situation than Jaxson Dart. An emphasis in Harbaugh’s decision, discussed often over the last week, was having a quarterback in place. ESPN’s Jordan Raanan posted this morning that Dart was a key factor in this decision.
The potential hire of Todd Monken will make this entire offense exhilarating in 2026. However, having the connective tissue of a head coach who bought in because of the young quarterback entering year two speaks volumes about the franchise’s direction.
Considering Harbaugh coached Joe Flacco and Lamar Jackson, it’s safe to say he knows what respectable quarterbacks look like. To have the ultimate validation of a coach of his caliber to want to build around Dart emphasizes the upward trajectory of the team.
Abdul Carter and Brian Burns rejoice
A calling card for Harbaugh when he was with the Ravens was having elite, deep pass-rush units. While the approach of having three pass rushers with Kayvon Thibodeaux, Abdul Carter, and Brian Burns was complicated under Shane Bowen’s direction, it fits perfectly with Harbaugh.
The pass rush unit was the Giants’ best unit on defense this year. With all three players likely to return, that probably won’t change under Harbaugh. Depending on who he hires, the defense should focus on winning by disrupting the quarterback.
In Baltimore, the Ravens in Harbaugh’s 18 years had multiple pass rushers they utlized to produce disruption. Guys like Terell Suggs, Elvis Dumerville, and Matt Judon made names for themselves as primary rushers in Baltimore with fantastic supporting casts alongside them. Burns and Carter with Thibodeaux in the fold already establishes the depth Harbaugh will need
Is Joe Schoen safe?
The final layer to all of this is general manager Joe Schoen’s job security. Considering how aggressive Schoen reportedly was in the process of luring Harbaugh, it seems he’s on good footing. Especially with this recent post of Harbaugh and Schoen out at dinner.
For Schoen’s failures as a drafter, this is the most impactful move he’s pulled off. It signficantly helps him in the future having a veteran coach who know what it takes to build a winning roster leading the charge. Hopefully, this relationship was initiated off of the premise that Harbaugh has the ultimate say in what the team will look like in 2026.
