The New York Giants are shifting their focus to their next opponent, the Philadelphia Eagles, this Sunday. Coming off a 34-17 win on “Thursday Night Football” two weeks ago, there is a hope New York can stun the reigning Super Bowl champions again.

Given this game’s heated rivalry, one wouldn’t expect either side to offer any praise for the other. Unexpectedly, Eagles defensive coordinator Vic Fangio praised Giants rookie quarterback Jaxson Dart.

“The teams that needed quarterbacks that bypassed him— they’re going to regret that,” Fangio told reporters.

When the Giants beat the Eagles two weeks ago, Dart was a key driving force for the victory. He finished the game with 195 yards passing, completed 68% of his passes, ran for 58 yards, and totaled two touchdowns.

The way Dart played against Philly was further evidence that the Giants have found their future franchise quarterback. It was not only a stellar passing performance but also a gritty, emotional effort that contributed to the team’s developing identity.

Hearing Fangio praise the young quarterback is promising evidence that he was the right choice in the 2025 NFL Draft. Fangio is regarded as one of the best defensive coordinators in the NFL and has consistently tormented opposing quarterbacks. Dart’s ability to challenge his defense clearly opened his eyes to his talent level.

An added layer to this that is worth considering: Is Fangio potentially eyeing the Giants’ head coaching job? With head coach Brian Daboll likely out by the end of the season, Fangio could be brought into the mix as a potential candidate. And was he singing the praises of Dart to catch the attention of the Giants’ organization and the fan base?

Fangio is 67 years old and has been around the NFL since 1986, with a one-year break in 2010 when he served as Stanford’s defensive coordinator. His experience in the league is notable, and he has been recognized multiple times as one of the most brilliant defensive minds in the sport.

His only head coaching opportunity came in 2019 with the Denver Broncos, producing a paltry 19-30 record. While he previously failed, his past mistakes could lead to success with a new franchise, as many coaches have done.

It’s unclear if Fangio would even want to take a head coaching job at his age, but he should be considered as a candidate. Considering the Giants’ defensive talent, he could be what’s needed to activate the group better than the current regime.

Most importantly, Fangio would be a hire unlike any they’ve made recently and one they need. Being an older and more experienced coach could address the team’s issues with attention to detail and execution. A true tone setter would do wonders for this team.
