The New York Giants and wide receiver Cole Beasley relationship has come to an end.
NFL Network's Mike Garafolo reported the parties are mutually parting ways. The news comes after Beasley took it upon himself to ask to be released from the team's practice squad.
The development should come as no surprise to Giants fans as Beasley started the season on practice squad Injured Reserve following a strong preseason. He has yet to play a game since then.
If there's something we've learned about Beasley in recent years is that he's got to play to be motivated and happy. Which, by the way, is absolutely fair for a proven, battle-tested veteran with over a decade of playing in the NFL. No one should knock him for wanting out as he waits on the practice squad.
After all, known as a "Brian Daboll guy" by the fan base since the head coach coached Beasley for three years in Buffalo, he was brought in for depth reasons. However, the Giants' wide receivers have been in surprisingly good health during the 2023 season.
On top of it all, at 1-5, the Giants need to start thinking about the future. That implies giving young players like Wan'Dale Robinson and Jalin Hyatt significant playing time.
"They're young," Daboll told reporters following the team's loss to the Buffalo Bills. "They’re young, so you’ve got to play them to develop them, too."
Where Beasley goes from here is intriguing. He's an experienced player who can still turn a switch on come crunch time. Perhaps the Giants could've tapped into that with a winning record down the stretch.
An NFL team can get some solid depth on him. But it's clear he'll want a chance at playing.
