The New York Giants will be in the great state of Michigan over the next two days as they have joint practices with the Detroit Lions.
Many teams in the league use these sessions in place of preseason games for their starters, seeing as they can control every variable of practice, something they can't do during live action.
But beyond that, there is a variety of advantages for New York, including one that many wouldn't even think of:
Daboll: "You get a look at a whole other roster"
"Last year you did the joint practices with the Jets, you ended up picking up (safety) Jason (Pinnock) and (tight end) Lawrence (Cager) off of their roster. Is there an added bonus here as well that you can potentially scout guys that could be a part of this team?" Asked a reporter.
"Yeah, absolutely," answered Daboll. "You get a look at a whole other roster. So, I know our scouting department will be here and be evaluating the players, not just our players and how they do, but also Detroit's players. I think it works well for us."
Every team records every snap of practice. So in a few weeks' time, when rosters are cut to their final 53-man total, there will be an influx of players looking for a job. And the only way they have a shot at landing on their feet?
Good tape and strong impressions.
"Dan [Campbell] mentioned getting a lot of defensive looks thrown at him, is there anything that you are particularly excited to look or excited to see?" Asked a reporter.
"I’d say everything," answered Daboll. "I love practicing against another team during training camp. Again, it’s different looks, it’s different matchups. It’s a very competitive two days of practice that I am looking forward to."
So expect a fiery couple of days in Michigan, with both sides looking to get the most out of the next 48 hours.
But don't be surprised if a few Lions turn into Giants come September.
