Latest Giants’ quarterback update says what we already knew about Brian Daboll following Week 3 loss to the Chiefs
New York Giants head coach Brian Daboll may have just indicated a move to Jaxson Dart is coming soon.
Is a change at quarterback imminent for the New York Giants? Will they finally transition from the veteran Russell Wilson to the rookie Jaxson Dart?
Based on what head coach Brian Daboll said Monday, it’s possible but not guaranteed heading into their Week 4 game against the Los Angeles Chargers. Like usual, he was asked multiple times by the media if they’d make a move. And Daboll said they’re discussing personnel changes.
“We’re working through all personnel decisions,” Daboll told reporters. “And we’ll do that over the next few days.”
Is it finally time for Jaxson Dart?
The Giants’ offense has been highly inconsistent over the first three weeks. In Weeks 1 and 3, the entire offense struggled, but in Week 2, only the passing game showed up. Last night, it was apparent that the gaudy 450-yard passing performance by Wilson was a flash in the pan, as he launched two interceptions on the same deep balls that produced touchdowns in the past.
Fans lost their patience long ago, so they’re all clamoring to see Dart play. Wilson’s struggles raise the question of how much worse the team could be with a rookie quarterback.
When grilled by the media about the quarterback situation, Daboll made it clear that he is not satisfied with the state of the passing offense. However, he made an effort not to blame it on Wilson.
“Like I said yesterday, in order to improve the passing game,” Dabol said. “And I’d say that was the number one thing we need to improve from yesterday, as a collective, everybody’s got to be doing exactly the right stuff … It’s not all on one guy. There’s multiple reasons why certain plays didn’t come out the way we wanted to come out.”
During his media availability, multiple reporters directly asked Daboll if he was indicating that a change is possible. He was also asked if they feel Dart is ready. Daboll’s response was telling about how they view the rookie.
“We put him in the game for the last two weeks,” Daboll said. “So we wouldn’t put anybody in the game we don’t feel confident with.”
Ultimately, it’s exciting that the possibility of switching to Dart is being considered. However, this tactic by Daboll is tiring. His dissatisfaction with the offense won’t completely change after rewatching the film. This ambiguous phrasing serves as a ploy to leave the door open and distract the fan base.
Daboll would gain more respect from the fans if he were willing to be committed and direct about their plan. Clearly, a 0-3 start wasn’t the hope for the first month of 2025. If Daboll wants to make a case to keep his job, he needs to make the transition already.
