Going into free agency, the New York Giants were one of the main organizations that needed to figure out both the short and long-term future of the quarterback position. The Daniel Jones era ended during the 2024 season, and the only signal caller on the roster right now is Tommy DeVito. Obviously, that will change this offseason.
So far through two days of free agency, the Giants have been shockingly quiet when it comes to quarterbacks, and the market is already starting to dry up. We have seen the Seattle Seahawks sign Sam Darnold, Justin Fields signed by the New York Jets, and the Indianapolis Colts brought in Daniel Jones as well. Geno Smith has also been traded to Las Vegas Raiders, while Kenny Pickett is heading to the Cleveland Browns.
Over the first two days, there have also been a lot of rumors surrounding Aaron Rodgers ending up with the Pittsburgh Steelers. Unless the Giants are going to make a move on Russell Wilson, which feels unlikely, the rest of the quarterback market is mostly backup options. They clearly have deferred on the potential starter market.
The actions are speaking very loudly right now. Everyone should know where things are heading for the Giants.
So what’s next? It should be easy to figure out. All offseason we have been wondering which quarterback-needy team will be aggressive in trying to find a quarterback in the 2025 NFL Draft. My money is on the Giants.
Currently, the Giants are slotted to select with the third overall selection when the action kicks off in April. There’s a world where the Tennessee Titans and Cleveland Browns both select a quarterback to kick off the draft. There does, however, appear to be some openness to at least one of them trading back.
Nobody knows if New York prefers Cam Ward (Miami) or Shedeur Sanders (Colorado) at this stage. Whoever it is, don’t discount this staff being super aggressive. Head coach Brian Daboll and general manager Joe Schoen are each on the hot seat entering the 2025 NFL season. They need to do whatever is possible to win football games, and get the Giants fan base excited.
