Running back Saquon Barkley was the second overall pick and played six seasons for the New York Giants. Yes, he left in free agency and is about to play the Super Bowl with the rival Philadelphia Eagles, but his connection with the Giants is undeniable.
During the Super Bowl opening night, by the way, Saquon showed he still follows what's happening in New York—and maybe is even trying to help them to solve the quarterback situation.
Doing TV work during Super Bowl week, soon-to-be free agent quarterback Jameis Winston asked Barkley who he should sign with in free agency. Well, you know the rest.
"I think New York needs a quarterback right now," Barkley said.
QB room
Saquon is correct. New York badly needs a quarterback. At this exact moment, the Giants are the only team in the entire NFL without a single quarterback on its roster. Obviously, Tommy DeVito is an exclusive-rights free agent and should be back, but it's still a wild situation to be in.
Drew Lock and Tim Boyle, who finished the season with the Giants, are slated to be unrestricted free agents. The team hasn't signed any quarterback to a future deal either.
Last offseason, Jameis Winston signed a one-year, $4 million deal with the Cleveland Browns to back up Deshaun Watson. He ended up starting seven games, with 13 touchdowns and 12 interceptions—an 80.6 passer rating, higher than Watson's.
The first overall pick in the 2015 NFL Draft, Winston played five seasons for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and four for the New Orleans Saints before this past year for the Browns.
Even though Jameis is an up and down quarterback, he would be a solid and inexpensive bridge option until the Giants try to find a long-term answer. And there might be competition, because Winston also tried to convince Andy Reid during the Super Bowl week that he would be a good option for the Kansas City Chiefs.
