The New York Jets are rolling into a new chapter of the organization full steam ahead. New York is looking to end what has been a brutal stretch of the organization’s history under new leadership — headlined by former player Aaron Glenn at head coach.

Glenn hopes to, amongst other things, instill a toughness to this football team that simply hasn’t been consistent enough. And while the personnel he has at his disposal will go a long way in helping to bring that to life, it’s also the mentality Glenn is seeking to create that will help forge this team’s identity.

Glenn shared his plans for the team’s first preseason contest on Thursday and, needless to say, it’s enough to get your blood pumping if you’re a Jets fan.

The Jets will play their starters in the preseason opener

“We’re playing. I can’t tell you how much guys are going to play, that’s going to be factored by how the game goes,” said Glenn on Thursday morning. The follow up: any reason (for the starters to play)?

“Because I want to play. That’s the reason.”

The message is clear for New York: strap up. Exhibition season or not, Aaron Glenn is going to work to get these guys ready to play and he’s going to have his team competing. In the infancy of a build, these are the kinds of decisions that can set the tone and reverberate throughout the entire locker room. It becomes an expectation. It sets the standard.

That’s the task that Glenn is charged with undertaking right now. And based on not just what he said, but how he said it, the standard is looking pretty clear for the Jets. And it should fire everyone up inside and outside of the locker room alike. It will take time for Glenn’s vision for his football team to come to life. But it won’t take long at all for everyone to know what he’s expecting and looking for. So strap up and get ready to play, starters. Preseason game or not.
