Jets have an obvious decision to make when it comes to Justin Fields in free agency

Cooper Rush? Russell Wilson? No, thank you.
There is one name that seems to entice Jets fans more than others because of his age and the fact that he has won a few games in the NFL. I’m talking about Justin Fields. And let me tell you right now, that would be the worst decision for the Jets to make.
Fields was drafted in the first round by the Chicago Bears, who after three years of below of average play, shipped him off to the Pittsburgh Steelers to back up Russell Wilson. After going 4-2 in six starts with the Steelers, Mike Tomlin and co. thought it best to bench Fields in favor of the now healthy Wilson. Wilson’s first game was against the Jets, and the Steelers dismantled the Jets giving validity to Tomlin’s decision.
Now a free agent, Jets fans are clamoring for the team to sign the former first-round pick as he will only be 26-years old at the start of next season. Here’s the problem, the Jets might actually do it.
Let’s look at the facts. Or in this case, the red flags. The Chicago Bears traded away Justin Fields in favor of number one overall pick Caleb Williams. That number one pick could have netted the Bears a bounty of players and picks that could have set their franchise up for decades. The problem was, they didn’t believe in Fields and instead made the move to take Williams first overall.
The Pittsburgh Steelers looked at what Justin Fields was and despite their 4-2 record, decided it best to bench him to make a run at a Super Bowl. There’s your next red flag.
By all indications, Fields wants to return to Pittsburgh next season to be the starter now that Russell Wilson is also a free agent, and instead of taking him and building around the young QB, the Steelers are reportedly trying to trade for Trevor Lawrence.
The Bears and the Steelers are the only two organizations that Fields has been a part of and both of them are telling you what they think of Fields as the quarterback of an NFL franchise. What makes the Jets think it will be different for them?
Fields is a decent player. He is a great runner of the football but is a well below average passer. Do we really believe that the new Jets inexperienced offensive staff is going to have the secret to unlocking Fields’ potential as a thrower of the football? If you believe that, I have some magic beans I’d like to sell you.
The real problem is that Fields is good enough to win some games, but not nearly good enough to make a playoff run. He’s fool’s gold in the regular season. So, if the Jets decide to ride 2025 (and likely beyond because of the contract demands) with Fields and he wins them 8-9 games, they are going to continue to roll with him and be stuck in purgatory.
It’s best to just steer clear of a guy like Fields in favor of a short-term answer. It may not be pretty, but it won’t last long either. Do I think Kirk Cousins, or Derek Carr, or even Jameis Winston has a Super Bowl run in them? No. But I know it will be over soon.
As Darren Mougey said in his introductory press conference, the Jets are not looking to win now, but from now on. Let Fields fool some other team. We have been duped long enough.
Garrett Wilson needs to address the trade rumors that were putting his future with the Jets in question
The quarterback for the 2025 New York Jets will not be Aaron Rodgers. And who the new quarterback will be throwing his passes to may be in question, as well. Several players have already voiced their displeasure over the news that Rodgers will not be returning, but one player in particular might be happy about […]
