The very easy 5 step blueprint to finally rebuild the New York Jets

The New York Jets are an embarrassment right now. Let's just call it what it is. Despite talking heads saying "the Jets are back!" every time they eek out a win, they are in fact not back. They're 3-8 and they're not going to make the playoffs unless they go on a miracle run and 9-8 is good enough to squeak in. Neither of those things will happen though.

The Jets have been trying to rebuild my entire life and it reminds me a lot of another team I spent my life watching rebuild, the Detroit Lions. Finally the Lions have seemed to have done it and they are best team in football right now. Perhaps the Jets should take a page out of their book.

Still, I don't think a rebuild isn't as far off as it might seem and the Jets don't have to tear everything apart. I actually have a five part plan the Jets could follow to make them a good team again and soon. Here we go:

Step one: Get rid of Aaron Rodgers

Look, I get why they did it, but man that was the worst thing they could have done. All we have ever seen from Rodgers is that he is an ego maniac that comes in and forces teams to bend to his will and his will never works.

The Jets sold their soul to Rodgers and all he  ever really did was get Randall Cobb a job. He's fully washed and this point he needs to just be gone after this year.

Fire Joe Douglas and hire Ray Agnew to be the team's GM

Maybe you thought I was joking when I said take a page out of the Lions book, I wasn't. Agnew is the Lions assistant GM and Lions' GM Brad Holmes' right hand man. He has help Holmes completely rebuild the Lions brick by brick.

Agnew didn't just help build this Lions team, he also helped build the Rams team that just won a Super Bowl in 2021. He was the team's Director of Pro Personnel for them from 2017 to 2020.

This guy is absolutely ready for a GM job and he's not just some analytical guy that you can grab from one of the popular teams. He has a history of actually building teams as opposed to being the smart guy from a good team.

Hire Aaron Glenn to be the head coach

One more page out of the Lions book. One of the big reasons why the Lions are as good as they are is because they have the right coach and that coach has been able to come in and build a culture that everyone believes in and everyone will fight for.

The Jets can't have Dan Campbell, but they can absolutely get the next best thing in Glenn. He is the defensive version of Campbell. Every single player on that team loves Aaron Glenn and would run through a wall for him. This should come as no surprise after he was voted the most liked coordinator in the NFL in an NFLPA poll last year.

You might think Ben Johnson is the way to go, but I'm telling you the culture has to come first. Then you can do the fun plays once you get it figured out.

Bring back Sam Darnold, but also draft his replacement

I am 1,000% serious right now. The Vikings are more than likely going to let him walk so they can move onto the J.J. McCarthy era. This would open the door for his return. He's shown in Minnesota that he can be a pretty decent quarterback with some weapons and good OC.

The tempting thing to do would be to draft a quarterback with a high pick and then try to make it work with that guy and as you've seen time and again in New York, that does not work more often than it does.

We're in "impatient owner world" right now and coaches and GM's are getting one shot to get their quarterback in the draft and then immediately become a playoff team. Why risk it? Get a vet that you know can at least carry you to the playoffs for one year and then start his replacement when you know he's ready to go.

I know this seems like a joke, but you have to understand that Darnold failed with the Jets because of the Jets and not him.

Build through the draft and be patient

The Rams started this whole "F them picks" thing in the NFL where teams just try to buy their way into good times. It doesn't work and everyone ignores that the Rams spent a few years building almost exclusively through the draft before they started spending the money.

The Jets need to focus on building the base of this team and get rid of the Davante Adams and the Tyron Smiths. Stop trying to buy your way in and take your damn time Woody.
