The 2025 NFL Draft is getting closer and closer and we're getting into that little window where teams will start trading picks around. Sometimes that includes moving players for those picks.
Pro Football Focus' Bradley Locker put together a list with each team's best trade asset ahead of the draft and for the Lions, he listed cornerback Amik Robertson. Here's his reasoning:
"The Lions addressed the loss of Carlton Davis III by signing D.J. Reed to a big-ticket deal, but the list of defensive players entering the last year of contracts is long. Robertson feels like one of the more likely players to be dealt.
In his first year in Detroit, Robertson churned out a 62.2 PFF coverage grade but a stellar 89.7 PFF run-defense grade. Given that the Lions drafted Ennis Rakestraw Jr. in the second round last year, the team should figure to get him additional reps this year — potentially by trading Robertson."
Look, I get the idea of what Locker is saying, but Robertson is a big reason why the Lions were ok with letting Davis walk. He played very well in the slot all year, but then when Davis got hurt, Robertson stepped in and played incredibly well on the outside. Well enough to let Davis go get $60 million in New England.
The highlight for Robertson was his big game against the Vikings when he held Justin Jefferson to three catches for 54 yards on nine targets. You don't trade that guy.
While it is true that Rakestraw was supposed to be the starter in the slot before his injury, they don't have to rush him into it when they have a really good trio with Robertson, Terrion Arnold, and D.J.Reed. When you have a secondary this good, you have to stick with it.
The Lions are likely not going to sign any more free agents any time soon, here’s why
It’s hard to see it happening.
