Philadelphia Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni isn’t afraid to speak his mind when it comes to people he respects.
Earlier in the season, Sirianni talked trash to Colts fans, sticking up for his mentor Frank Reich after Indianapolis fired him in the middle of the season. After the Eagles’ beatdown on the New York Giants, Sirianni went out of his way to defend his defensive coordinator Jonathan Gannon.
“This guy is an unbelievable coordinator,” Sirianni said after the win. “The fact that he doesn’t get respect from our radio station blows my mind. This guy is an incredible coordinator, people love to play for this guy.”
“So, every time I hear an answer about Jonathan Gannon I laugh to myself,” Sirianni said with a smile. “Matter of fact, coaches from other teams ask me, ‘Does Jonathan Gannon get (expletive) here?’ I’m like, ‘Somehow, yeah.’ Like, this guy is incredible. He’s gonna be a head football coach in the National Football League because of what he does. This guy is a stud.”
Gannon, who has been named a frontrunner for the Houston Texans’ head coaching job, finally got a chance to respond to Sirianni’s postgame rant.
“I don’t really pay attention too much,” Gannon told reporters on Tuesday. “We’ve always had a great relationship, and he’s never once wavered behind closed doors in his confidence to me and what we’re doing, and that’s why he’s a great head coach.”
Gannon’s comments are perfect for so many reasons. It’s clear that Sirianni isn’t putting on an act for the media. He’s as genuine as head coaches come nowadays.
With Gannon and offensive coordinator Shane Steichen in contention for head coaching jobs across the league, Gannon vouching for Sirianni makes Philadelphia an even more attractive place to coach if the Eagles need to replace either assistant this offseason.
