Philadelphia Eagles linebacker Zack Baun may have played his way out of Philly following his performance in Sunday's 22-10 playoff win over the Green Bay Packers.
As if his All-Pro 2024 regular season wasn't enough, Baun racked up four more tackles and a crucial interception in the Eagles' wild card win to help the team advance to the next round.
The Eagles had initially signed the former New Orleans Saints 2020 third-round pick to a one-year deal in NFL free agency last March for some extra depth at the linebacker position.
He spent his first four years in New Orleans playing primarily on special teams but quickly became a key contributor to the Eagles' defense under Vic Fangio when he was moved from outside to inside linebacker.
In 16 starts for the Birds this past regular season, Baun racked up career highs across the board with 3.5 sacks, one interception, four pass breakups, five forced fumbles, 11 tackles for loss, five quarterback hits, and 151 total tackles. Those numbers earned him his first All-Pro nod.
Baun will hit the open market again this March unless, of course, the Eagles decide to extend his contract.
Paying linebackers isn't typically something Eagles general manager Howie Roseman does and has let go of stars in the past, as he did with T.J. Edwards and Kyzir White in March of 2023. However, we saw how that played out for Philly's defense in 2024.
If it were up to Baun, he would love to stay in Philly.
“Obviously those things are out of my control and in the hands of people above me,” Baun said, “but I love it here. I love the guys in the locker room. I love the organization. I hope it works out.”
But if Roseman and the Eagles decide not to pay up, then Baun will have no trouble finding a new contract elsewhere.
Eagles’ devastating injury news could end up meaning bigger role for rookie
There is a silver lining.
