3 Remaining Steelers’ Free Agent Targets: WR with ties to Aaron Rodgers, Pro Bowl safety, and Isaac Seumalo’s replacement
Here are three targets the Steelers should consider after day one of the 2026 NFL negotiating window.
The Pittsburgh Steelers wasted no time during day one of the two day negotating window ahead of the official start to NFL free agency on Wednesday. Opting to dive in headfirst, opposed to sticking their toes in the water, the Steelers came out hot, landing their WR No. 2 via the Michael Pittman trade.
From there, the Steelers added two pivotal players via corner Jamel Dean and running back Rico Dowdle, helping to plug the holes left by the days earlier departures of James Pierre and Kenny Gainwell. But towards the end of the day, the Steelers lost starting left guard Isaac Seumalo to the Arizona Cardinals. The team’s focus must clearly shift towards finding his replacement, but the moves at wide receiver shouldn’t be done yet, and the team still needs another safety. We name fits at every spot.
Steelers 2026 NFL Free Agency Remaining Targets
Target No. 1: Romeo Doubs, WR
Even after the Pittman trade, the Steelers don’t have enough assets in that room. If they wanted Calvin Austin III back, they probably would have signed him by now. Outside of Roman Wilson, there is no one in that unit that you can confidently say will be there Week 1 (that may go for Wilson as well).
So signing Doubs, who played his rookie season with Aaron Rodgers and the Green Bay Packers, would be a great move in my opinion. He would bring a vertical threat to the offense after coming off career highs in receiving yards and yards per catch. At 26 years old and with a price tag that won’t break the bank, I like the move a lot for Pittsburgh.
Target No. 2: Kevin Byard, Safety
With the addition of Dean, the Steelers can now put Jalen Ramsey at nickel if they decide to keep him, which means they need a true free safety. Byard is coming off a 2025 campaign that saw him play all 17 games and earn Pro Bowl and first-team All-Pro accolades.
His ball-hawking nature hasn’t gone away as he led the league with seven interceptions and added eight pass breakups. He’s the type of veteran secondary addition that screams Steelers defense.
Target No. 3: OL Elgton Jenkins
Some other center-guard hybrids on the market could make sense as the replacement for Seumalo, but Jenkins is the best one in my opinion. His first year in Green Bay was a year after Mike McCarthy left, but he played guard and even tackle for the remainder of Aaron Rodgers’ tenure in green and yellow.
He would be a great stopgap as the Steelers search for their left guard of the future.
