3 Steelers on the roster bubble ahead of the preseason finale highlighted by a local favorite and former Super Bowl-winning WR
These three need a big game.
The Pittsburgh Steelers will play their final exhibition on Thursday night, and it’s set to feature the largest number of starters yet.
However, there are a variety of players situated 46-53 on the roster who are quite literally fighting for their football lives in Pittsburgh.
Here are the three most notable names. . .
SCB Beanie Bishop
If there is one position that is deep in Pittsburgh, it’s corner, and more specifically, slot corner. Jalen Ramsey is your starter, and Brandin Echols has a long history of playing that position in the league and has been a good addition in the secondary thus far. That puts the onus on Bishop to show up in the Steelers’ preseason finale. He needs a big game to solidify his spot on the roster.
Mike Tomlin spoke on Monday, saying he was pleased with Bishop’s year two development, but that Bishop need not worry about the ‘Jonses’ or those in front of him on the depth chart, rather to focus on himself.
Bishop had an up-and-down rookie year, but the local product from West Virginia had plenty of flashes and signs of growth that led you to believe he can play in this league. The problem is, it’s simply a numbers game right now, and the two names in front of Bishop are certified players in the NFL.
Meaning Bishop will need to be undeniable on Thursday night.
WR Robert Woods
Woods has been completely unremarkable to this point in Pittsburgh. I understand that he’s a veteran presence, a locker room leader, and a former Super Bowl champion. But he needs to show that he can still contribute in this league as a pass catcher.
To this point, the top three WRs of Austin, Wilson, and Metcalf have produced more, but even guys like Scotty Miller and rookie UDFA Ke’Shawn Williams have been more reliable. Honestly, I was more surprised that the team cut Roc Taylor earlier in the week than I would have been if it were Woods.
So he needs a big game to say the least.
EDGE DeMarvin Leal
Leal simply hasn’t been able to find his footing in Pittsburgh thus far. It’s been a rocky first four years in Pittsburgh. Whether it be him trying to find a position or dealing with injury or anything else. With Jack Sawyer now in the mix, it’s up to Leal to make his presence felt if he wants to stick in Puttsburgh.
