Quarterback Aaron Rodgers ends the narrative that the relationship between him and Steelers OC Arthur Smith won’t last long
He believes things will be just fine.
It’s probably because of Aaron Rodgers’ prickly persona in the public light, but there are many talking heads just waiting on the first time that Aaron Rodgers and Mike Tomlin, or Aaron Rodgers and Arthur Smith snap at each other.
Between the big personalities and egos of Smith and Rodgers, you can see how a Russell Wilson 2024 situation could arise.
Only, Rodgers isn’t Wilson and his relationship with Arthur Smith is already rock solid…
Aaron Rodgers excited to work with Arthur Smith
“It’s really the relationship with Arthur [Smith],” said Rodgers via video from Post-Gazette Sports when asked what excites him most about the offense. “To have a guy that, we sat yesterday, for like, two and a half hours, you know, just talking ball. And it’s not all X’s and O’s. It’s storytelling from time to time. He’s not a rigid guy at all. So anything that ideas that I have, or ideas that some of the receivers are giving to me to give to him . . .
” . . .Everything is taken into consideration, which I really appreciate. And we’re installing, I mean, the last few days, we’ve installed stuff that I’ve gone back and looked at from the past, or other guys have had similar ideas, because we have a little open forum in my room. Anytime you want to come in and suggest something or get on the same page about something, let me know, because I’ll take it right to heart.”
The relationship between a play-caller and his quarterback is no different than husband and wife. There has to be equal effort for it to work. Sometimes Aaron Rodgers is going to have to sacrifice for the better of the team.
Maybe that’s a favorite concept of his, or the amount of passes he wants to throw, or any other variable.
The same goes for Arthur Smith.
He has a well-defined scheme that he’s implemented in multiple spots across the league. But running your offense just for the sake of doing so and not adapting or tailoring it to your personnel, or in this case, your future Hall of Fame quarterback, may as well be banging your head against the wall.
So will there be growing pains? Surely. Is it going to take time for everyone to get on the same page, especially with little to no reps from Rodgers in the preseason? Absolutely.
But as long as they both remain receptive to change, the narrative that they are going to blow up at each other is going to be a proven fallacy.
