Aaron Rodgers is as old-school a football as they come. Forget the fact that he turns 42 in a few weeks or that he was drafted before most of the Steelers roster went to preschool, it’s the toughness and competitive integrity that show just how much Rodgers loves the game.

That was proven on Sunday, when despite the fact that he broke a bone in his wrist, he was clamoring to come back into the game. It’s the same reason that news came out on Monday morning that Rodgers doesn’t plan on missing any time.

Well, now we have more clarity on exactly Rodgers is dealing with, and what comes next.

MRI shows Aaron Rodgers won’t need surgery

Steelers QB Aaron Rodgers underwent further tests Monday that confirmed he won’t need surgery on his fractured left wrist, sources tell me and Ian Rapoport,” wrote Tom Pelissero on X-Twitter on Tuesday. “Rodgers is pushing to play Sunday at Chicago. But doctors must clear him and his status moving forward is TBD.

Believe it or not, the Steelers actually have precedent in this situation. Terry Bradshaw broke his left wrist in 1977 and played with a cast for the rest of the season. I wouldn’t bet against Aaron Rodgers taking a page out of Bradshaw’s book, even if those two don’t exactly see things eye to eye.

“Aaron Rodgers, to my understanding, has told people close to him that he’ll be back very soon. He has told more people close to him that he does not want to miss a game. He is pushing to play in this game [vs. Bears],” reported Ian Rapoport of NFL Network on Monday morning.

I know it seems crazy because he broke a bone in his wrist, but it is a left wrist. If he’s able to grip, if he’s able to receive the ball on the snap, it is actually possible that Rodgers could play this week. I had someone tell me that he was essentially 50-50 to play this week. So it sounds bad, but Aaron Rodgers does want to play and is trying to see how he could do it for the Steelers.

It looks like the decision on whether or not Rodgers plays will come down to the wire. We know how invested he is, but this may be a situation where the Steelers have to save Rodgers from himself. This week’s injury reports will be crucial.
