It was reported last week that the Pittsburgh Steelers would be bringing in WR help, a proven playmaker who has a history with Aaron Rodgers via Marquez Valdes-Scantling. That became official on Monday when the Steelers signed MVS to the practice squad.

But to make room for the two-time Super Bowl winner, Pittsburgh had to say goodbye to one of its own, a homegrown talent from West Virginia who made the team as a UDFA and ended up starting for the Steelers in 2024, is now gone before taking a single snap in 2025.

Steelers release Beanie Bishop to make room for MVS

Many were surprised when Bishop was released after training camp, returning only as a practice squad member despite playing in all 17 games last year. He recorded four interceptions, seven pass breakups, and 45 total tackles during his rookie year, and he was a pesky slot corner that fit like a glove on the Steelers’ defense.

But then came the offseason, and the Steelers completely remodeled their secondary. Names like Chuck Clark, Juan Thornhill, Darius Slay, Brandin Echols, and Jalen Ramsey were added to the mix. That created an uphill battle for Bishop due to numbers alone. He was released and signed to the practice squad, but then came MVS.

Valdes-Scantling rose to notoriety during his time with the Green Bay Packers and Rodgers from 2018 through 2021. The WR, who recently turned 31, would go on to win two Super Bowls with the Kansas City Chiefs before having a litany of stops in recent years.

Most recently, MVS was with the San Francisco 49ers, whom he opted to sign with over the Steelers in the summer when Pittsburgh was first pursuing him. His time last season with the New Orleans Saints was the most productive he’s been in recent years.

The move to sign MVS provides some valuable depth for the Steelers, but Pittsburgh could use one more needle mover on offense. The team still needs a difference-maker on the perimeter and a reliable option outside of DK Metcalf. We’ll see if they make it happen before the trade deadline passes on Tuesday.
