As the NFL world decides to wait on Aaron Rodgers, the Pittsburgh Steelers are doing their due diligence.
After meeting with multiple prospects at the quarterback position, a few names have started to generate traction as rookie options for the Steelers.
But according to Colin Cowherd, Jalen Milroe of Alabama is their guy…
Jalen Milroe to the Steelers at 21?
“I talked to an NFL exec last night, very well-connected, and this is a keep your head on a swivel, Aaron Rodgers. I’m told the Steelers really like Jalen Milroe, 21st pick, first round. So if Aaron signs with Pittsburgh, it’s going to become Kirk Cousins,” Cowherd said on FS1’s “The Herd.” “They’re taking a quarterback. If the 21st pick, Milroe’s not taken, Pittsburgh is leaning now and taking him.”
Milroe is the most dynamic QB prospect that we have had since division rival Lamar Jackson was drafted. Part of Cowherd's point (or the exec's) was that the Steelers know that in their division, they need a difference-maker.
And that's fine, and maybe that difference maker is Milroe. But not in round one when you have a gaping hole in your defensive line, are favored to land Aaron Rodgers, and will be loaded with draft picks next year, in a draft that boasts much better quarterback prospects on paper.
Milroe has the potential to be very good. But he also has the potential to flame out before he ever takes off…
Spoke with an NFL assistant GM about Alabama QB Jalen Milroe: “He’s one of the most intriguing guys in the entire draft. There’s a narrative that he’s just a running quarterback, but that’s way off… His deep ball can be a major weapon at the next level. I’ve watched him a lot — he’s very capable in the pocket and carves up zone defenses well. There’s a lot to work with, and I like the kid.”

If the Steelers want Milroe, they should take him. Whether that's at 83, or maybe by trading a certain someone at WR to get back the second-round pick they lost in the DK Metcalf trade and then drafting Milroe.
But a round one selection is the ultimate dart throw, and I'm not sure the Steelers roster is in a position to do that right now.
Actually…they aren't.
