The Pittsburgh Steelers have come into the new league year without a starting QB on their roster.

A conundrum that was never a part of the plan, it has been clear that ever since Justin Fields signed with the New York Jets, their top two options were Aaron Rodgers and Russell Wilson, and in that order.

Well, they now have competition for both, and they could be left with neither…

Russell Wilson to meet with Giants, Browns

Sources: Free-agent QB Russell Wilson is scheduled to fly tonight to Cleveland to visit with the Browns on Thursday, before being scheduled to fly to New York on Thursday night to visit Friday with the Giants.

While the standoff between Rodgers and the Steelers continues, the brass in Pittsburgh has had Russell Wilson as their plan C, stored away in their back pocket the whole time.

Basically, if Rodgers decided not to join the Steelers, they would grin and bear it and run it back with Russ for another year. Presumptuous on their part, Russ threw a wildcard into the mix and now has multiple suitors that could drive him away from the Steelers, no matter how much he said he wanted to stay.

So Pittsburgh is basically looking at Rodgers or bust at this point, only they now have a new competition for him as well…

Minnesota Vikings decision-makers are still evaluating their options at quarterback, including the possibility of signing Aaron Rodgers. The four-time MVP is intrigued by the idea of playing in Minnesota. For now, it’s a waiting game, sources tell Mike Silver and me.

There is now a real chance that the Pittsburgh Steelers watch the Cleveland Browns stick it to them and sign their former starter, while the New York Giants, Vikings, or retirement lure away their number option in Rodgers.

A predicament they wanted no part of, had they gone through with plan A and signed Justin Fields, they wouldn't have been in the mess they have now created. Instead, the only QB on their roster at the start of the new league year is Skylar Thompson.

So if the Steelers miss out on Rodgers all because they want to play hardball and make him take less because they know they offer the best situation, the DK Metcalf trade will be for not and Omar Khan will have some serious questions to answer.
