As we approach a month until the NFL Draft descends on the home of the Pittsburgh Steelers, the team has gone through the waves of free agency and filled just about every obvious vacancy except for one.

That of course, would be the starting quarterback position. As we await an answer from Aaron Rodgers and what the Steelers do night one in April, Pittsburgh can suddenly kick the tires on a quarterback who once donned the black and gold.

Steelers can sign Joshua Dobbs following his release from the Patriots

Dobbs was drafted by the Steelers in the fourth round of the 2017 NFL Draft after playing his college ball for the Tennessee Volunteers. Dobbs has had his moments in the league with teams like the Tennessee Titans and Minnesota Vikings, and he’s known for being one of the most cerebral players at the position.

Nicknamed the Passtronaut, his background in aeronautical engineering has shown through his career via the speed and ease in which he can pick up an offense and succeed on short notice. His run with the Vikings in 2023 was extremely impressive.

Could Josh Dobbs be an actual starting option for the Steelers?

Let’s live in a world where the Steelers get through the draft and the two quarterbacks on their roster are Will Howard and Mason Rudolph. That situation is unlikely, but I wouldn’t be opposed to seeing a three-way camp battle between Dobbs, Rudolph, and Howard.

In that scenario, I would give the upper hand to Howard, given that he’s the most unproven of the trio and obviously offers the highest upside, but I think if Dobbs were given a true starting chance, he would be a serviceable starter in Pittsburgh.

Never has he walked into a situation where he leaves training camp knowing he’s the starter for the regular season. It may not be a desirable world for the Steelers to live in, but until Aaron Rodgers or Ty Simpson walks through that door, Pittsburgh has to consider every available option.
