The New Orleans Saints continue to create new ways to mismanage a big game. This time, Dennis Allen is to blame for a rough decision right before halftime against the Los Angeles Rams.
It's the most important game of the season for both teams. Even then, the Saints head coach made a major mistake in a game where he was trialing 10-7 just before the half.
Just past midfield, the Saints were dealt a 4th and 5. After not converting in a similar scenario earlier in a half, Allen chose to go for it again.
Keep in mind – there was less than a minute and a half remaining in the first half of the game. The Rams offense was consistently moving up and down the field in the first half against a gassed Saints defense.
Yet, Allen chose to be aggressive in a situation where it actually made sense to be conservative.
Think of it this way… Los Angeles would have needed to go 90+ yards if the Saints get a good punt from Lou Hedley, as they did earlier in the game. Instead, New Orleans failed to convert on fourth against a blitz, and the Rams got the ball on their own 42.
The difference in going around 55 yards and at least 80 yards is pretty large within a minute of game time. Allen made the wrong choice, regards of hindsight.
He struggled to stop Sean McVay and co. on offense throughout the half, yet sent his unit back out there on a shorter field.
It's just another bad move by a head coach drowning in his own mediocrity.
