The San Francisco 49ers figure to have a close eye on the offensive tackles at the 2024 NFL Scouting Combine, and they will be able to get an in-depth look at a potential target at that position who is among those with the most to prove in Indianapolis.
Georgia's Amarius Mims stands a high-upside potential solution to the 49ers at right tackle, where Colton McKivitz's play was a factor in their Super Bowl 58 defeat to the Kansas City Chiefs, with his skill set in pass protection making him an ideal fit to fix their problems on a much-maligned right side of the offensive line.
However, he is seen as something as a risk given he only made eight collegiate starts for Georgia and was consistently hindered by an ankle issue last season.
Mims' high-ankle sprain required tightrope surgery. However, ESPN's Jordan Reid reported on Monday that his ankle is fully healed and that Mims will participate in all on-field testing and drills at Lucas Oil Stadium.
While the interviews are the most important part of the Combine for teams evaluating prospects, Mims' testing will be watched extremely closely because of his previous injury issues. The 49ers, given the prevalence of zone blocking in their running game, will surely be eager to see Mims' 10-yard split in the 40-yard dash and get a look at how he operates in space.
Because of his vast potential, a strong workout could take Mims out of San Francisco's reach at 31st overall, but the 49ers should be intently monitoring a prospect with a huge ceiling and look to get him in the interview room as they try to decide what to do with their first day-one selection since 2021.
49ers have shot at reunion that could address big issue
It would make a lot of sense.
