The San Francisco 49ers went into free agency prioritizing the edge rusher position, and they have made a significant move to boost their outside pass rush by agreeing to terms with Leonard Floyd.

Floyd is set to join the Niners on a two-year, $20 million deal, per NFL Media's Ian Rapoport. It could be worth up to $24 million and Floyd will get $12 million guaranteed in year one.

That is a significant amount for a player entering his age-32 season but speaks to his consistency in recent years.

Floyd racked up 10.5 sacks in his sole season with the Buffalo Bills, matching his career-high from the 2020 season with the Los Angeles Rams, when his defensive coordinator was Brandon Staley, who is now assistant head coach for the 49ers.

Staley was also the linebackers coach for the Chicago Bears in 2018, when Floyd was still with the team that drafted him ninth overall in 2016.

HIs 39.5 sacks over the last four seasons are the 10th most in the NFL in that span and the Niners will hope that, reunited with his old coach, he can maintain that production for a defense that did not get enough from the edge spot opposite Nick Bosa during last year's Super Bowl season.
