Despite the San Francisco 49ers moving the ball very well for the most part in 2024, they have now dropped two of their first three games having been deprived of the services of Christian McCaffrey.
Reigning Offensive Player of the Year McCaffrey is on injured reserve as he deals with Achilles tendinitis.
In his absence, the 49ers' running game has continued to largely thrive with Jordan Mason in the backfield. Mason is second in the NFL in rushing with 324 yards, however, it was clear as the Niners failed to close out the Los Angeles Rams in Week 3 that San Francisco's offense obviously misses McCaffrey and the 'easy buttons' he can offer in the passing game.
On Monday in his conference call with local media, head coach Kyle Shanahan confirmed McCaffrey is taking a step that will hopefully accelerate his return to the field by traveling to Germany to see a specialist on Achilles tendinitis.
"I'm not sure what doctor it is," Shanahan said. "I know he's going to see a specialist that I believe can help him with his Achilles process.
"I think he's doing that over these next few days, and hopefully, it'll help."
The 49ers still racked up 425 yards of offense in the 27-24 defeat to the Rams without McCaffrey, Deebo Samuel and George Kittle, Brock Purdy excelling in a display that saw him find Jauan Jennings for three touchdowns and make history with his ninth career game with a passer rating of at least 130.0.
However, with defensive tackle Javon Hargrave now gone for the season with a torn triceps muscle, it is becoming increasingly clear the offense will need to consistently carry the load if the 49ers are to have a hope of contending this year.
As such, they need their stars back sooner rather than later. It would be a huge help if this decision by McCaffrey expedites his return to action.
Kyle Shanahan’s postgame comments make the play that turned 49ers loss even more infuriating
It’s impossible to understand.
