With the regular season under a week away, several San Francisco 49ers have elected to change their jersey numbers ahead of their season opener against the New York Jets.
Per Matt Barrows of The Athletic, four members of the 49ers' draft class have changed their numbers.
Second-round pick Renardo Green has swapped 31 for 0, vacated by the departed Samuel Womack III, with fourth-round running back Isaac Guerendo taking 31. Guerendo had previously worn 39.
Safety Malik Mustapha has switched to 6 from 43, and his fellow fourth-rounder Jacob Cowing will now wear 19 after donning 83 in the preseason.
The number 19 was previously worn by All-Pro wide receiver Deebo Samuel, who returned to his college number of 1 earlier this offseason.
Samuel of course had tremendous success right off the bat as a rookie while wearing 19, racking up 961 yards from scrimmage and scoring six total touchdowns.
With the number of playmakers ahead of him in the pecking order in the passing game, Cowing is unlikely to put together similar statistics in his first year in the league.
But the number change could still be a very good omen for Cowing as he looks to build on an impressive preseason.
Meanwhile, on the practice squad, Trent Taylor has switched to 81, having worn the 19 now occupied by Cowing. Terrace Marshall will now wear 84.
Relief likely to be 49ers’ overriding emotion despite unsurprising delay to Ricky Pearsall’s debut
They know it could have been so much worse.
