As a disappointing San Francisco 49ers season has progressed, it's become clear they would benefit hugely from investment in both sides of the trenches this offseason.
The 49ers' defensive line is not the dominant force it once was, while there has been disappointing play at several spots on the offensive line.
With the 49ers on the brink of elimination from the playoff hunt, attention will soon turn to the offseason and preparations for the 2025 NFL Draft.
A to Z Sports released a three-round mock on Monday that features the 49ers addressing both those issues, and taking two players from the same school to do so.
The Oregon Ducks have been the dominant force in college football in 2024 and this mock has the Niners taking two of their key players, going with defensive tackle Derrick Harmon 15th overall in the first round and then selecting offensive tackle Josh Conerly 46th overall in the second.
San Francisco has an impressive history with Oregon first-round defensive linemen, having taken Arik Armstead 17th overall in 2015 and DeForest Buckner seventh overall in 2016. Armstead was the 49ers' longest-tenured player prior to being released this offseason and played in two Super Bowls. Buckner was a part of the 2019 team that went to the Super Bowl, a season in which he was a second-team All-Pro.
Harmon would provide a boost to an interior pass rush that has been conspicuous by its absence this year. He leads FBS defensive tackles in pressures (50), per Pro Football Focus, and is second among all interior defensive lineman with at least 100 pass rush snaps in pass rush win rate (17.6%).
Conerly, meanwhile, could fill an immediate need and be pegged as a solution to address another likely to become apparent in the coming years.
As AJ Schulte writes in the mock draft:
"Eventually, San Francisco has to invest in their offensive line. Whether Conerly is the right tackle of the future or the heir apparent to Trent Williams at left tackle, he is a terrific scheme fit for their outside zone scheme."
With Colton McKivitz providing below average play at right tackle for the second straight season, it is past time for the 49ers to find an upgrade. Allowing Conerly to gain experience right off the bat while also learning from future Hall of Famer Williams with a view to succeeding him would be a smart move.
The final 49ers pick in the mock sees them take LSU EDGE Bradyn Swinson 77th overall in the third.
San Francisco's lack of edge depth was glaringly apparent during Nick Bosa's recent three-game absence. Swinson has 8.5 sacks and 13 tackles for loss this season. He is sixth among FBS edge rushers with 57 pressures and eighth in win rate (21%) among edge defenders with at least 100 pass rush snaps.
