The San Francisco 49ers have gotten a lot of excellent play from young players in their secondary this season but, with concern over a standout rookie in the defensive backfield, they have made a move to add depth at cornerback.
Renardo Green was the sole player on Kyle Shanahan's postgame injury update after the 49ers' dramatic 23-20 win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
The second-round rookie has thrived in recent weeks and excelled in a starting role against Tampa Bay, recording two pass breakups and finishing the game as the 49ers' highest-graded defender by Pro Football Focus.
However, he left the game in the fourth quarter with a toe injury and did not return, with Kyle Shanahan unable to offer any further information.
With Charvarius Ward having missed the game following the death of his one-year-old daughter and understandably being afforded as much time as possible by the team, the 49ers could soon have something of a depth issue at corner if Green's injury keeps him out.
On Monday it was reported the 49ers have made a move to swell their ranks at the position, signing former New York Giants corner Nick McCloud to the practice squad, per Dan Duggan of The Athletic.
McCloud was cut by the Giants last week after refusing to take a pay cut.
An undrafted free agent in 2021, McCloud has a history of producing strong play on special teams and has the versatility to play inside and out on defense.
The 49ers will hope they don't need to rely on him in the latter regard but, if Green's injury is something that will keep him on the sideline, McCloud at least gives them some additional insurance and a potential contributor on special teams, an area in which they continue to struggle.
