Brock Purdy sets record straight on why he accepted a team-friendly deal, and answer says a lot about where the 49ers are headed

Many times, we have seen NFL players and teams trying to win negotiations to the final cent. While it's hard to blame them, the San Francisco 49ers and Brock Purdy found an important middle ground that will presumably allow the quarterback to have a great compensation without taking away the team's ability to build a strong roster around him.

Even though $53 million a year is certainly a lot of money, the comparison to other quarterbacks considering cap inflation makes it look like a big win for the 49ers. Purdy is 14th in the NFL in cap percentage at signing (18.9%), behind Joe Burrow, Dak Prescott, Justin Herbert, Lamar Jackson, Patrick Mahomes, Jalen Hurts, Kyler Murray, Deshaun Watson, Trevor Lawrence, Jordan Love, Tua Tagovailoa, Jared Goff, and Josh Allen.

"This is our vision, this is hopefully what we can get out of it and get what you deserve and have earned and go from there,” Purdy said. "But obviously, we want to make sure that we're working together with our organization and setting up everybody for success. It's not just for me to get all the money, as much as I can, but also like, hey, let's surround yourself with a great team and players and a great locker room and all those things mattered. So, we definitely talked about that."

At this exact moment, the 49ers are third in the entire NFL in available cap space, with $39.189 million. It doesn't mean the team will go out there adding many more pieces, because part of the plan is to roll over a significant amount for 2026. The projection for next year is tighter, as the team has $6.397 million in projected space with 50 players under contract.

In recent weeks, the 49ers also reached record extensions to other pieces of the roster, giving third contracts to tight end George Kittle and linebacker Fred Warner.

It wasn't an easy offseason, and several free agents were allowed to walk. But the 49ers put themselves in a favorable position to keep building a solid foundation around Purdy, and this is the best outcome for everyone involved.
