The San Francisco 49ers are set to make the decision many anticipated on Saturday, with NFL Media's Ian Rapoport reporting reigning Offensive Player of the Year Christian McCaffrey will be placed on injured reserve.

McCaffrey was on Friday ruled out of the 49ers' Week 2 game with the Minnesota Vikings, having surprisingly missed their season-opening win over the New York Jets with a calf injury and Achilles tendinitis.

Head coach Kyle Shanahan said IR was a consideration for the 2023 rushing champion, and he will now miss the next four games after the 49ers elected to give McCaffrey extra time to rest.

Jordan Mason will start at running back in his stead, having exploded for 147 yards and a touchdown on the ground in the win over the Jets.

In addition to Sunday's encounter in Minnesota, McCaffrey will miss games with the Los Angeles Rams, New England Patriots and Arizona Cardinals.

While McCaffrey's absence is obviously a huge blow to the 49ers, the timing of his prospective return could hardly be better.

Indeed, should all go to plan, McCaffrey will return in time for the teeth of the 49ers' schedule, with the difficulty level ratcheted up from Week 6 onwards.

The 49ers travel to face the Seattle Seahawks for a Thursday Night Football game in Week 6, when McCaffrey's fresh legs will potentially hugely beneficial on a short week.

They then return off a mini-bye to host the Kansas City Chiefs in a rematch of last season's thrilling Super Bowl, before welcoming the Dallas Cowboys to Levi's Stadium in the 49ers' final game before the bye.

Though Seattle has a revamped defense led by new head coach Mike MacDonald, recent history suggests the Seahawks are an ideal opponent for McCaffrey to face on his return. In his three regular-season meetings with the Seahawks, he has 367 rushing yards and three touchdowns at an average of six yards per carry. He also had 119 yards on the ground and a receiving touchdown in the 49ers' Wild Card rout of the Seahawks in the postseason after the 2022 campaign.

Winning on the road in Seattle could be hugely important to the 49ers' hopes of retaining their NFC West title, while maintaining their dominance of the Cowboys figures to be key to the race for playoff seeding in the NFC. Sandwiched between those games, the Niners' reunion with the Chiefs is crucial even if it is not a conference matchup.

The 49ers simply must prove to themselves that they can beat Patrick Mahomes and Co. after two Super Bowl defeats to the Chiefs. Victory in Week 7 will heal some of the scar tissue. McCaffrey, who was crestfallen in the 49er locker room at Allegiant Stadium following their overtime loss in Super Bowl 58, will obviously be desperate to help San Francisco finally knock off Kansas City.

Putting McCaffrey on IR increases the chances of him being available for that massive encounter. The 49ers, as they proved in their primetime opener, can excel without McCaffrey across a relatively soft first five games of the schedule. The Seahawks game begins a stretch in which his presence will be much more important.

This is clearly not the start to the year McCaffrey wanted, but it's a case of trading short-term pain for long-term gain in games that will likely be much more impactful in determining how far the reigning NFC champions go this season.
