Seattle Seahawks shocking trade of Geno Smith paves way for two potential paths at QB via free agency and the 2025 NFL Draft
The Seahawks had already begun blowing up their roster earlier this week as they parted ways with star wide receiver Tyler Lockett, Dre'Mont Jones, George Fant, Rashawn Jenkins, and Roy Robertson-Harris. The Seahawks had already begun blowing up their roster earlier this week as they parted ways with star wide receiver Tyler Lockett, Dre'Mont Jones, George Fant, Rashawn Jenkins, and Roy Robertson-Harris. Then of course DK Metcalf requested to be traded the same day. The writing was already on the wall for the Seahawks' 2025 season.
As we discussed earlier this week at A to Z Sports, the Seahawks were obviously going to make further moves towards a roster rebuild. It just wasn't clear what would come next.
Luckily, the Seahawks found a team willing to trade for Geno Smith as general manager John Schneider moved their veteran quarterback to the Las Vegas Raiders for a third round pick on Friday evening. According to multiple sources, the two sides had been in contract negotiations all week, but could not come to a number that both the Seahawks and Smith found appropriate. Where does that leave Seattle now with free agency set to kick off and the 2025 NFL Draft just around the corner?
The great news for Seahawks fans is that this trade of Geno Smith paves the way for two potentially exciting options (including both of them together) at quarterback that do not include having to pay Smith nearly $40 million dollars this season.
The first one is far too obvious. Minnesota Vikings quarterback Sam Darnold is set to become a free agent and spent time with the Seahawks' new offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak when they were both with the San Francisco 49ers in 2023. Kubiak was Darnold's passing game coordinator at the time. Darnold of course just led the Vikings to a 14-3 season with a career year of solid quarterback play.
There are a few other free agent options, but Darnold would be a perfect fit as a bridge quarterback to whoever the Seahawks draft this year or next. Or, if he finds great success in 2025 Darnold could potentially just become the franchise quarterback.
Second, the Seahawks could certainly select a rookie quarterback in the 2025 NFL Draft. While the Seahawks currently sit with the 18th overall pick in the first round this year, they could definitely attempt to trade up (possibly using their newly acquired third round pick) or simply let a quarterback fall to them.
Coming off the NFL Combine it seems that Cam Ward is the consensus QB1 in the class and will not make it anywhere near the Seahawks' first round selection. On the other hand, league-wide perception of Shedeur Sanders seems to be wavering just a bit, leading some to believe he may fall down the NFL Draft board. If Sanders is taken, the Seahawks could select Ole Miss QB, Jaxson Dart, the most efficient college football passer in the nation last fall. Of the three options, Dart is the most likely option to be available for Seattle.
This potential path shouldn't surprise Seahawks fans as it was clear they were already considering drafting a quarterback a year ago. John Schneider and Mike Macdonald logged double-digit quarterback visits last spring (including formal interviews, pro days, and on-site visits). Unfortunately all six of the first round quarterbacks were selected before it was time for the Seahawks to make their pick.
Don't be surprised if the Seahawks sign Sam Darnold, then immediately follow that up by visiting with any and every early-round quarterback in the 2025 NFL Draft class. The best path to potential future success may actually include signing a veteran and drafting a potential future franchise quarterback this spring too.
