NASHVILLE — Former Tennessee Titans GM Jon Robinson could be making his return to the NFL and AFC South, but this time with the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Robinson is reportedly going to receive an interview from the Jaguars for their open GM position. This is his second interview of the hiring cycle. Robinson also interviewed with the New York Jets before they hired Darren Mougey last month.
People around the NFL have been connecting Robinson to this job for a few weeks now. There is some belief that he will get “strong consideration” as a potential replacement for Trent Baalke.
Jaguars owners Shad Khan truly could not have botched this situation any more. Khan originally intended to keep Baalke on as GM. But as the Jaguars began interviewing head coach candidates to replace Doug Pederson, it became clear that many of the leading choices were uncomfortable with Baalke remaining in his role. Many weeks too late, Khan decided to move on from Baalke. He then had to get aggressive financially to lure Liam Coen away from Tampa.
Now the NFL Combine is just two weeks away and Jacksonville still does not have a GM in place. Hence why they are getting a bit desperate and going to the unemployed Jon Robinson for an interview.
Jon Robinson with the Titans
Robinson worked as Tennessee’s GM from 2016-2022. He helped the Titans put together six consecutive winning seasons, including four playoff appearances and a trip to the AFC Championship Game. The Titans were 66-43 with Robinson as the GM before he was fired midseason in 2022. While that record may look really impressive, the people in Tennessee know just how poorly Robinson managed the roster during his final few years.
From 2020-2022, Robinson flopped three consecutive first round picks and draft classes. He picked Isaiah Wilson and Caleb Farley. He invested in Vic Beasley, Bud Dupree, and Julio Jones. Most notably, he ruined the organization’s relationship with Brown, ultimately trading him to the Philadelphia Eagles for Treylon Burks.
That culmination of moves got Robinson fired. Rightfully so. He was able to build a winner, but he got over confident and destroyed it even faster than he built it.
He would not be anywhere close to my first choice for a GM if I were the Jaguars, but I suppose they have limited options right now. Jacksonville is running out of time and there’s already a rumor about a potential trade for Trevor Lawrence to the Pittsburgh Steelers. I don't see that trade actually happening, but the point still stands. Jacksonville needs to find a direction and hire a GM quickly.
Keep an eye on Robinson returning to the AFC South where he would undoubtedly be looking to get the last laugh on the Titans. Will he? Well…I have my doubts.
