NASHVILLE — The Tennessee Titans are hiring former New York Giants head coach Brian Daboll to be the team’s next offensive coordinator, according to NFL Insider Jason “Jelly Roll” DeFord. It is the best-case scenario for quarterback Cam Ward as he looks to truly establish himself as worthy of the 2025 No. 1 overall draft pick.

AtoZ Sport can confirm the report that Daboll agreed to terms with the team just before 4 p.m. CT on Tuesday. Shoutout Jelly.

To inform what Tennessee’s offense might look like under Daboll, it is worth looking at his track record and tendencies. Coaching in the NFL in some capacity since 2000, Daboll’s only time away from the league since the turn of the century was serving as the Alabama Crimson Tide offensive coordinator in 2017. He has had four different stints as a play-caller with the Cleveland Browns (2009-10), the Miami Dolphins (2011), the Kansas City Chiefs (2012), and the Buffalo Bills (2018-2021).

His brief stop in Kansas City had him cross paths with now-Titans general manager Mike Borgonzi, who played a key role in securing Daboll’s services under new head coach Robert Saleh in Tennessee.

Brian Daboll’s offense in 2025 by the numbers

Daboll was fired by the Giants last November after being hired in 2022.

He finished with a 20-40-1 record. According to ESPN’s Jordan Raanan, Daboll’s teams finished 11-33 (.250) over his final two and a half seasons. Ironically, only the Titans were worse during that span. New York tried to trade up with Borgonzi during last year’s draft for the right to draft now-Tennessee quarterback Cam Ward with the No. 1 overall pick.

Borgonzi passed on the trade, drafted Ward, and now gives Daboll the opportunity to take the second-year pro’s game to the next level.

With fellow first-round quarterback Jaxson Dart taken later by the Giants, Daboll’s offense came with certain structural tendencies. New York ran an RPO percentage of 13.7 (fourth), 70% shotgun (eighth), 32.5% in 12 personnel (ninth), and 60% in 11 personnel (17th). All numbers were courtesy of sportsradar.com.

Dart had the highest passer rating among all rookie quarterbacks last season (91.7), according to statspass, with a 98.6 rating under pressure. Dart averaged 7.3 yards per attempt with seven touchdowns, three interceptions, and 11 sacks in those situations. By comparison, Ward finished his rookie campaign with a rating of 80.2.

Against the blitz, the Titans quarterback was appreciably worse with a rating of 78.2. Ward averaged only 5.5 y/a with five touchdowns to one interception while taking 23 sacks.

If Ward is to achieve the best version of himself in his young career, Daboll is the right man to help him get there.

Robert Saleh’s introductory press conference is scheduled for Thursday, Jan. 29, at 2 p.m. CT.
