The Detroit Lions need to keep paying the mortgage before they can go on vacation, per Brad Holmes

Maybe the weirdest headline I've ever gone with, but there's a reason for it. We got a chance to catch up with Detroit Lions GM Brad Holmes at the 2025 NFL League meetings in Palm Beach, Florida, on Monday, and Holmes had some thoughts on Lions fans wanting the team to spend more money and get the big splashes.
He likened running the Lions to being a homeowner.
"This analogy popped in my head this morning, of that, you know, you have financial responsibilities. You have a mortgage, your kid's college fund, nine to five. You know you have your insurance, and you know you have to pay those things, but that might require you can't take the vacation you really want to right now. That's kind of where we're at right now, is that we have so many of these young players that have been on rookie deals, and we've been enjoying the impact that they've all been bringing. But now a bill is coming, and what you spend this year is going to impact next year, even past 2027, so that's the discipline that we have to adhere to."
He's right. I don't know about you, but I haven't been on vacation in a while, and that's because we've been making sure that the mortgage, car notes, dogs, insurance, electrical, water, cable, internet, and streamers stay up to date. We'd love to splurge on a vacation to the Maldives, but that's just not in the cards right now.
If you haven't figured it out yet, free agents and trades are the vacations, and the Lions players on the roster that they love are the mortgage. They have a great house with those guys right now, but the bill is coming due on all of them. In the next year or so, the Lions have to find a way to pay Aidan Hutchinson, Jameson Williams, Kerby Joseph, Brian Branch, Jack Campbell, Sam LaPorta, and Jahmyr Gibbs.
This isn't going to be easy and it means they can't go on vacation with Myles Garrett and Maxx Crosby, but they get to keep a place to live with a really good house full of their own stars. It just makes so much more sense that way.
Will there ever be a vacation? Holmes says he thinks there are no vacation plans coming, and he once again reiterated that the bill is coming due. The good news is that if the Lions can keep these guys here, they'll have a nice staycation.
The chances of Za’Darius Smith returning to the Lions are starting to look a little bleak
The Detroit Lions made a move that surprised some Lions fans when they released Za'Darius Smith ahead of free agency. From a financial standpoint, the move made sense. He was days away from triggering his bonuses and his void year. That would have brought his cost from $5 million to $11 million. "Yeah, look, it […]
