In the first round of the 2025 NFL Draft, the Detroit Lions selected Ohio State defensive tackle Tyleik Williams. The Lions have some plans for Williams that could see him taking the starting DT spot to begin with while they wait for Alim McNeil to get back from the torn ACL he suffered during the 2024 season.

After that, the likelihood is that he'll flex in with DJ Reader once McNeil is back and then ultimately take over the starting nose tackle job. With this selection, the signing of Roy Lopez in free agency, getting Levi ONwuzurike and Makhi Wingo back, it's hard to find a spot for Brodric Martin.

The Lions drafted Martin in the third round of the 2023 NFL Draft. In fact, they kind of moved Heaven and Earth to make sure that they could move up to get him. At the time, it seemed like a bit of a questionable move since so many just hadn't seen much of him at Western Kentucky.

It was quickly explained and understood that Martion would be a project for the Lions. With his size and athleticism for his size, there was a lot of upside for him. But then he barely played his rookie season, and when he got in one game against the Raiders, it looked like he needed a lot more work.

In 2024, he showed up to camp in better shape, and there were some visible gains on the field during the summer and in the preseason. Then he suffered an injury that caused him to miss most of the season.

Upon his return, Martin got to see the field for two games, and in both, he struggled mightily again.

The Lions could certainly give him another shot and see where things go during camp, but right now, the ceiling for him seems to be making the practice squad. If he can't do that, the Lions may just have to chalk this one up as a loss.
