There seems to be some disagreements among Lions coaches after loss to Vikings
Who’s right here?
The Detroit Lions are a good team right now, but they’re not as crisp as they once were. It’s not that there’s been some major descent or regression; it’s that there’s been some pretty fixable issues that are plaguing the Lions.
One of the big things is communication. That is, if you ask Dan Campbell. Someone else might have other ideas.
Lions OC John Morton believes the Lions’ communication has been good despite Campbell saying otherwise
This isn’t just something that Campbell said once. He’s been saying it all season long. It started after the Lions’ Week 1 loss to the Packers when Campbell said, “We had some miscommunications, some MAs, that really cost us at the worst times.”
After the Lions’ loss to the Chiefs, he said it again when talking about how it takes an offensive line time to learn how to communicate with each other without talking.
Then on Sunday, after the loss to the Vikings, he said, “Listen, we did not handle some of the communication well. …That’s the bottom line. We’re better than that. We just are.”
It seems that this is something everyone can agree on. However, on Thursday, Lions OC John Morton held a press conference and had this to say about communication errors.
“Yeah, I think our communication has been really good. Ever since the Green Bay game, it’s been really good. It’s just a matter of some guys getting beat. That’s all it is. I’m just telling you that’s – when you look at it over and over and over, it’s one or two guys that are just breaking down. And we’ve got young guys, and they’re still learning. And really, they shouldn’t be because we’re halfway through the season. I mean, everybody’s a vet, and we’ve addressed it.”
So which one is it? Personally, I think there’s a little bit of both at play, and maybe there’s a chance that both guys see the word communications a little differently. There is no doubt that some guys are just not playing as well as they usually do. That’s been brought to attention by more than just Morton on Thursday. Kelvin Sheppard seemed to echo that sentiment in his own words.
However, there’s definitely some miscommunication on the field, and it’s evident at times. Jared Goff has made some bad throws, but the receivers have also been out of place a little more than you’d like. The offensive line is giving up too many pressures that appear to be avoidable.
But Morton is right to a point. The Packers game looked like a JV team that was playing together for the first time with no practice. The Lions haven’t looked like that in a while. There are a few things that need to be fixed, and let’s see if the Lions can get on the same page on Sunday and get those things going in the right direction.
